Integration of nanotechnology, bioengineering and other technologies into the textile industry

The traditional textile industry is labor-intensive and has low cost and profit. Li Yi, a professor of the Department of Textile and Clothing at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, said that with the progress of science and technology, nanotechnology, bioengineering and other technologies will be integrated into the industry, bringing new impetus and direction to the textile and clothing industry. New technology can lead the industry to transform into a high-tech textile industry with high added value and high profit, such as biomedical textiles and high-performance clothing products.

He said that the "Biofunctional Materials" Laboratory of Polytechnic University has completed a number of major scientific research projects, successfully transferred more than 20 inventions to the industry, and a number of patented products have been introduced to the international market, including Hong Kong elite athletes and firefighters. Among them, the fabric comprehensive water conductivity tester has been sold to 29 countries and regions, and has become the national standard of China and the American standard.

Lin Xuanwu, the managing director of Meiluo Knitting Factory (International), who has been engaged in the textile industry for many years, said frankly that people always wear clothes, so they are optimistic about the future development of the textile and garment industry. However, facing the increasingly high cost market, he stressed that the industry should be automated, otherwise it would be difficult to survive. At present, the company has 34 machines that can replace 80 manpower and can operate 24 hours; If the repair and maintenance are done well, some machines will be able to pay back after one and a half years of purchase.

He said that although the machinery is becoming more and more advanced, it is not a panacea. It can only help to a certain extent, and it is difficult to completely replace human hands. The most important thing is that machines are used by people, not that people become slaves of machines.

For the technology elements that have attracted much attention, Lin Xuanwu believes that the most important thing is to truly apply technology and creativity to the textile industry. The company has made seamless shirts, and the products are rare, which are very "exciting to customers". Although the price is relatively high, it is very popular because the materials used are environmentally friendly and pollution-free, and the whole clothes are clean and healthy with fewer people. He said that many textile industry peers are doing ODM (original design manufacturer). He stressed that we must know "who is the buyer", provide customers with products beyond their choice list, and take a few more steps to achieve long-term development.
